Work and Education
Dr. Alona Angosta is a tenured Professor and Associate Dean for Research & Scholarship at Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON). She received her Doctor of Philosophy degree from The University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Research
Dr. Angosta’s research focuses on chronic disease, lifestyle interventions to improve health outcomes and reduce health disparities. She is recognized for her work in cardiovascular health of underrepresented populations in the U.S. She has secured external and internal grants for her research projects as principal investigator or co-investigator. Her accomplishments in the dissemination of science include numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, abstracts and proceedings, and presentations to international, national, and regional nursing and scientific conferences. Teaching, Leadership, and Clinical
More than 15 years of experience in academia, Dr. Angosta has taught at the graduate and undergraduate programs. She has mentored numerous students and chaired and/or served as a member of doctoral dissertations, Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) projects, and advised Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) students. She has mentored junior faculty by helping them publish, conduct research, and advance their education and professional careers. Prior to joining Baylor University, she was the director of the graduate program (MSN and post-master’s certificate) at The University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Nursing. During her director role, she was instrumental in elevating the graduate program’s profile making it the #1 graduate nursing school in NV and top 10 online MSN program in the nation. It is during her leadership that the program’s national rankings rose to #7 in the category of online education and from 76th to 40th in the category of Graduate & Professional Programs (U.S. News and World Report, 2021). She was also instrumental in increasing the enrollment of the MSN-Family Nurse Practitioner program and establishment of the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program.
A veteran and former Lieutenant of the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps, Dr. Angosta is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner with 20 years’ experience in primary care, internal medicine, acute care, and military medicine. Prior to her advanced practice role, she was employed as a registered nurse/charge nurse in cardiovascular care unit, emergency care, and level 1 trauma intensive care unit.
Honors and Awards
In 2020, she was inducted as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing for her substantial contributions in advancing and transforming nursing and reducing health disparities. She is also a recipient of the Nurse Practitioner Advocate State Award for Excellence awarded by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.
Committees, Memberships, and Community Service
As a member of Baylor Research Integrity Council, Dr. Angosta serves on multiple committees at LHSON, including Chair of the Tenure Committee, and member of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion task force. Her professional memberships include American Association of Nurse Practitioners, American Academy of Nursing, Southern Nursing Research Society, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society, and Sigma Eta Gamma chapter. Regarding community service, she is an active member of St. Ann Parish Church where she serves in the Eucharistic Ministry as a Lector. She loves to travel with her family, watch movies, and enjoy nature. She has two terriers named, Luke and Yoda.
