LHSON Received the Sigma’s 2023 Chapter Key Award
For the third time, LHSON Eta Gamma Chapter #169 received the Sigma’s 2023 Chapter Key Award. The Chapter Key Award was established in 1991 which honors Sigma chapters that excel in chapter-related activities such as membership recruitment and retention; publicity and programming; professional and leadership development; and local, national, and international collaboration. Congratulations!
LHSON Faculty Attend STTI Biennial Convention in November 2023
LHSON faculty members, Drs. Katy Bartlett, Lina Nguyen, Cheryl Tucker, & Laura Zebreski, along with Dean Linda Plank disseminated their scholarship at the Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Biennial Convention, November 11 - 15. More than 2,000 Sigma members and global leaders in nursing came together to celebrate the STTI heritage over the last 100 years and to embrace the current organizational call to action to Be Bold. LHSON faculty shared 3 presentations.
LHSON Faculty Attend ICN Congress in July 2023
LHSON faculty members, Drs. Jennifer Jones, Lyn Prater, and Lori Spies disseminated their scholarship at The International Council of Nurses (ICN) Congress, July 1-5, 2023. This is THE largest international nursing event with over 6,200 nurses from 150 countries in attendance. The theme of this years conference was “Nurses Together: Force for Global Health.” It provided the opportunity to share and learn with our global nurse colleagues. LHSON faculty shared five presentations and posters.
Baylor University and Bangalore Baptist Hospital Awarded Funds - to Build a Women's and Children's Healthcare Research Center in India
The U.S. Agency for International Development’s Office of American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (USAID/ASHA) recently awarded Baylor University a $900,000 grant for Bangalore Baptist Hospital (BBH) to construct a new Women’s and Children’s Healthcare and Research Center in Bengaluru, India. The new Women’s and Children’s Center will help cultivate positive relationships between citizens of the U.S. and India. It will increase the number of services delivered to more women and children in Bengaluru; empower them to lead healthy lives and improve access to healthcare among vulnerable populations; build future healthcare leaders—particularly among women; and serve as a setting to implement U.S. evidence-based practices and new innovations in obstetrics, gynecology, neonatology, and pediatrics.

Healthcare Simulation Week -LHSON Virtual Reality Simulation Research
Dr. Kelly Rossler is paving the way for simulation research at LHSON. She studies the effectiveness of simulation-based teaching strategies on improving interprofessional education and collaborative practice among nurses and healthcare professionals. In partnership with Boise State University, Dr. Rossler recently completed testing the effectiveness of a low-cost virtual reality system that allows nurses to realistically work with patients and equipment in a virtual environment. Currently, she is conducting a study to compare simulation teaching modalities to transition newly licensed nurses into practice. Dr. Rossler is also working with Ganesh Sankaranarayanan, PhD, Assistant Director for the Center of Evidence Based Simulation at Baylor Scott and White Health to develop studies on an immersive virtual reality-based experiential learning simulator to improve medication administration, on the use of virtual simulation technology for prevention and early diagnosis of skin cancer, and on the effectiveness of virtual reality simulation on fire safety skills among students. During National Simulation Week in late September 2018, Bianca Castro, anchor and health reporter with KXAS-TV in Dallas-Fort Worth reported on Dr. Rossler's research and our simulation lab, and the story was aired on more than 100 NBC affiliates throughout the country. LHSON Awarded Excellence in Educational Research by STTI
LHSON is proud to share that on Wednesday, July 18, 2018, Dr. Shelby Garner and Dr. Erin Killingsworth were called to the stage at the 29th International Research Congress of Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society. They received the 2018 Excellence in Educational Research Award, awarded by the Sigma Theta Tau International, Melbourne, Australia. The award was given for an abstract and presentation entitled: "The Effectiveness of Simulation Education on Improving Self-Efficacy Towards Teaching Among Nurse Educators in India." The entire team of authors included: Shelby Garner, PhD, RN, CNE; Erin Killingsworth, PhD, RN, CNE; Leena Raj, PhD (c), RN; and Martha Bradshaw, PhD. An open access article disseminating the full study was also published in International Nursing Review, the official journal for the International Council of Nurses or by clicking here. LHSON Graduate Selected for Fulbright to India
Recent Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing graduate Amanda Ward Braswell, B.S.N. ’17, of Carrollton, Texas, has been selected to receive a prestigious Fulbright grant to India. She is among three Fulbright recipients this spring and Baylor’s 52nd Fulbright recipient since 2001. To learn more click here.
Inauguration Ceremony in India of New Simulation Education & Research Centre
LHSON congratulated Tomas E. Ceremuga, PhD, CRNA, LTC (ret), ANC, USA for receiving the 2018 Researcher of the Year Award presented by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) Foundation. Dr. Ceremuga is a faculty member for LHSON’s United States Army Graduate Program in Anesthesia Nursing (USAGPAN) "We are incredibly fortunate to have Dr. Ceremuga as one of our esteemed faculty in our program. Our highly trained, educated and successful graduates are a testament of his expertise, dedication and passion for education," said COL Denise M. Beaumont, CRNA, Director of the U.S. Army Graduate Program in Anesthesia Nursing. According to the AANA, the Researcher of the Year Award is named in memory of John F. Garde, a previous Foundation Trustee, AANA Executive Director and charter member of the AANA Foundation. The John F. Garde Researcher of the Year Award recognizes people who have made significant contributions to the practice of anesthesia through research. Dr. Ceremuga received his Bachelors degree in psychology at Youngstown State University and his MSN in Anesthesia Nursing at the University of Akron. He continued his education in the Neuroscience program at the Uniformed Services University in Maryland. He received his PhD in 2003, and then became a biochemistry and pharmacology instructor in the U.S. Army Graduate Program in Nurse Anesthesia at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. A co-worker of Ceremuga admires his service stating, “His research has culminated in twenty-three publications in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Ceremuga has been selfless in his research activities. For example, he has mentored 108 student nurse anesthetists in implementing all aspects of research. His service to his students and nurse anesthesia make him more than deserving of the John F. Garde Researcher of the Year Award.”
Inauguration Ceremony in India of New Simulation Education & Research Centre
LHSON extends its congratulations to Bangalore Baptist Hospital (BBH) in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India regarding the grand inauguration ceremony of its new Simulation Education and Research Centre. Over a year ago USAID awarded Dr. Shelby Garner with Baylor University LHSON $652,800 to partner with BBH. The grant funded the construction of a 4-story building with a state-of-the-art Sim Center for nurses and other health professions including housing for 48 nurses at BBH.
Dr. Kelly Rossler Received INACSL Poster Presentation Award
LHSON attended the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning conference in June 2017. There were over 160 posters representing simulation projects and research from around the world. Kelly Rossler's poster presentation was awarded 2nd place. Her poster entitled, Readiness to Transition: Integrating Human Patient Simulation into a Nurse Internship Program, highlighted Kelly's research with new graduate nurses transitioning to practice. In addition, Erin Killingsworth and Kelly both gave podium presentations.
