LHSON Partners with International Leadership of Texas
On Friday, September 20, six faculty members of the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) participated in a BMI screening event with the International Leadership of Texas (ILT).
ILT is a charter school with a campus located in Lancaster, Texas. The LHSON faculty supervised seven of its DNP students as they worked alongside undergraduate students in collecting BMIs on 963 children grades 3-12. The event provided LHSON’s graduate students an opportunity to get very familiar with plotting growth charts and learning more about how the referral process works. In addition, it gave them an opportunity to connect with the community and demonstrate Baylor's global health mission.
“We had both graduate and undergraduate students there all day and they were so inspired by the event,” said Deborah Shirey, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, Associate Dean for Graduate Education, LHSON. “We have been asked to return in the spring. What a blessing and an honor for the LHSON to have been approached exclusively for this event!”
Children who were in the 85th percentile or greater on the growth chart were referred into a program at Texas Children's, “Get Up and Go.” ILT is a free public charter school with student enrollment of over 26,000 K-12 grade students at 26 locations with campuses in DFW, Houston, Cleveland, and College Station.
The LHSON recently established this community partnership and will be working closely with ILT to serve the needs of their students across the state. We plan for future ILT events to offer interprofessional education (IPE) opportunities for Baylor.
