Work and Education
Dr. Prater has taught nursing at the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing for over 39 years as an Instructor, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and currently as Clinical Professor where she teaches primarily in the undergraduate program and is the coordinator for the fourth semester graduating senior students and faculty. Her research interests focus on maternity and child health as well as building nurse capacity internationally. In 2019 she was named Baylor Fellow from the Academy of Teaching and Learning with the emphasis on Education for Global Engagement and in 2020 was named senior Baylor Fellow for Teaching and Learning with Technology. In December 2025 she received the inaugural GLOBE award from the Center for Global Engagement. Her passion for international work began in 1977 when she was faculty sponsor for the School of Nursing heritage medical mission trip to Mexico. Since that time, Dr. Prater has initiated and participated in numerous collaborative efforts with faculty and students on mission trips, international delegations, and study abroad programs in Argentina, Great Britain, India, Iraq, Mexico, and Vietnam. Her major teaching areas currently include Transition to Practice, the clinical capstone course for graduating seniors as well as the undergraduate Study Abroad course Women’s Health Care in Great Britain. Dr. Prater was a Clinical Instructor of Maternal-Child Nursing at the University of Texas at Austin, School of Nursing from 1979-1981.
Her active certifications include Certified Nurse Educator (CNE); Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP); Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
Dr. Prater’s additional experience other than education is comprehensive. She worked as a Dallas Staff Nurse in Labor and Delivery for Methodist Medical Center since 2008 and has served as an expert witness/nurse consultant for various law firms since 1999. Previously, she was a Clinical Associate and Clinical Examiner for Excelsior College; Staff Nurse for Labor & Delivery, Mother-Baby Care and Instructor, Sibling Preparation for Mesquite Community Hospital; Contract Instructor-Childbirth Educator for The Family Way in Dallas; CPR Instructor for the American Heart Association; Perinatal Education Coordinator, Nurse Epidemiologist, Clinical Nurse Liaison in Maternal Child Nursing with Methodist Medical Center and Sibling Class Instructor and Childbirth Instructor with St. David’s Hospital in Austin.
