Summer Rio Grande Valley Mission Trip, June 4-10
Launching into the summer, the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) traveled to the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) from June 4-10, 2022, to learn, lead, and serve with long term mission partners. Six faculty and students from BU LHSON along with two family members (future Baylor Bears!) participated, as well as two faculty team leaders: Jennifer Jones, DNP, APRN, AGCNS-BC, CCRN-K, Clinical Assistant Professor and Amee Moreno, MSN, APRN, CPNP, PC/AC, Clinical Instructor.
While in the RGV, students and faculty came along side our local mission partners and served in a variety of capacities. The team provided health education, assisted with food distribution and health education at a local church-based food pantry, and served in a variety of roles at the Catholic Charities Respite Center. We also worshiped with a local church on Sunday morning. This was a true global health experience for the students as they were immersed in the local culture. The students experienced first-hand cultural differences, health disparities, and refugee and immigration issues that will forever mold their future nursing practice. We ended the trip with an excursion to South Padre Island.
