Work and Education:
Dr. Shirey is Associate Dean for Graduate Education and Clinical Associate Professor for Baylor University LHSON. She joined LHSON in 2019 as the FNP Coordinator and assumed the AD position in August 2022. She has taught both traditional and online courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels for universities in Tennessee, Texas and Arkansas for the past 20 years and enjoys teaching students through evidence-based resources, as well as sharing her own clinical experiences as a family nurse practitioner. In addition, she has served as DNP Project Chair and committee member for multiple DNP students. Dr. Shirey is experienced in urgent care, community health, and infectious disease specialty.
Committees:
Dr. Shirey currently serves as a Texas Nurse Practitioner (TNP) University Ambassador, as well as on the TNP Editorial Board. At LHSON, she serves as co-chair of Graduate Studies and DNP Program Coordinator meetings and participates on numerous other committees for LHSON and the university. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International (Eta Gamma Chapter), Texas Nurse Practitioners, North Texas Nurse Practitioners, American Nurses Association, American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Southern Nursing Research Society, and National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculty.
Articles and Presentations
Dr. Shirey was selected for a podium presentation at the National Organization for Nurse Practitioner Faculty (NONPF) 49th Annual Conference, Spring 2023 in Orlando, FL entitled Partnering for Good: Meeting Local Needs to Prepare Global Nurses. She was also featured in the SNRS Newsletter Member Spotlight for her help in organizing a health fair for the homeless in Dallas. In May 2022, Dr. Shirey published an article with Dr. Kristi Feutz entitled Measles 2019: Outbreaks, prevention, and treatment recommendations which was selected as the CME feature in The Nurse Practitioner. In 2021, she presented a poster based on the aforementioned article at the National Nurse Practitioner Conference in Keystone, CO.
Community
Dr. Shirey is a volunteer FNP for a Dallas-based domestic violence center. She participates in local charities benefitting the homeless and underserved, as well as for animal rescues, first responders, and veterans. She and her husband participate in running events throughout the Metroplex. They live in Wylie and attend church at Chase Oaks in Plano, TX, where they are volunteers for The Local Good Center, a non-profit center for the locally underserved.
